MISSION SAN RAFAEL

Descendants Of The Coastal Miwok Mission Indians Receive Apology After 190 years

In 1817 the Mission San Rafael Arcangel was established to convert native people to Catholicism and  be an outpost for the rule of Spain in Alta California. Since that time the incursions of Spain, Mexico, and the United States, into this native land, have left its people culturally bereft and homeless.

On December 8th, 2008 the church celebrated its 190th year with a formal apology to the attending Coast Miwok descendants. Greg Sarris, Tribal Chairperson of the Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria, graciously received the apology on behalf of the tribe from Bishop Francis Quinn. Sarris indicated that though the history of European contact with native people was destructive, it is now considered a time to move forward and establish a healthy, sustainable future that we can all live with.

Storyteller Video was contracted to document this historical event as part of the on-going story of the Coast Miwok people.
